Cake Pricing Guide

Learn how to price your cakes like a pro.

1. Calculate Your Ingredient Costs (COGS)

This is the most basic step. You must calculate the exact cost of every single ingredient in your cake, from the flour and sugar to the vanilla extract and sprinkles. Don't forget non-edible costs like cake boards, boxes, and dowels. Our advanced calculator lets you input these directly.

2. Factor in Your Labor and Time

Your time is valuable! Decide on an hourly rate for yourself. Track how long it takes you to consult with the client, shop for ingredients, bake, decorate, and clean up. A complex 4-hour decorating job should cost significantly more than a simple 30-minute one. Use the "Labor" section in our calculator to see this impact.

3. Don't Forget Overhead

Overhead includes all the non-cake-specific costs of doing business. This means your electricity, water, gas, website hosting, marketing, business cards, and a portion of your rent or mortgage if you're a home baker. A common method is to add 15-20% to your COGS and labor to cover these, which you can set in the "Business Costs" section.

4. Add Your Profit Margin

Profit is not the same as your labor wage. Profit is what allows your business to grow, buy new equipment, and handle unexpected events. A typical profit margin is 20-30% on top of all other costs (COGS + Labor + Overhead). Our calculator lets you experiment with this percentage to find a final price you're comfortable with.
